Natalie was waiting for Dean when he got there. She had two letters in her hands and a pinched look on her face.
"Nat?"
"I'm a bad girlfriend."
She waved the owls from Pansy and Ginny.
"It was my boyfriend's birthday on Sunday, and I didn't get him anything. Bad girlfriend. Bad."
Dean plucked the letters from her hand and pulled her into a hug. "You are not a bad girlfriend," he said with a chuckle. "Quite the opposite, in fact. Hell, I forgot about my birthday until I got Gin's owl."
Natalie was making a face at him. "You have to help me out here. I'm pretty sure girlfriends give gifts on the birthday. You're making me look bad here, Dean. I want to do this relationship thing correctly."
He sighed. "Nat. You make me happy and, moments of abject stupidity aside, I'd like to think that I make you happy. That's about as correct as it gets, love. And as for making you look bad?" He gave her a playful leer. "Not possible."
"I'm serious, Dean. I'm pretty sure the girlfriend gets the boyfriend a birthday gift. It has to be, like, a rule or something." Natalie frowned. "And yes, you do make me happy."
"Well, in that case..." Dean grinned. "I have some belated gift suggestions, but most all of them involve making you late for work tomorrow."
Natalie made a face at him. "I'm not going to do... that just to make up for being a bad girlfriend. That's not a good gift."
"I have to argue."
"It's not a real gift."
"Again-"
"Dean," Natalie snapped. "All right. We have to go about this birthday thing logically. Is there anything you need?"
Dean pondered for a moment, then shrugged. "Aside from you? Not that I can think of."
"Dean!"
"Seriously! I've got a good job, a nice place to live, and more clothes and jewelry than I could possibly wear. The only thing I want or need in my life is you." Leaning down, he kissed her softly.
"Honestly. You are the best gift I've ever received." He grinned. "And I didn't even have to wait until my birthday to unwrap it."
Natalie scowled. "Well, is there anything you want?"
He opened his mouth.
"If you say me, I'll hex you."
Dean closed his mouth quickly. No sense tempting fate, after all. This would be frustrating if it wasn't so damned cute, he thought absently. He remembered something that Harry had once told him about Dumbledore, and almost smiled.
"One can never have enough socks," Dean quoted with a smile, "and maybe some pants as well?" His smile widened. "Though some undies for you might be a better gift. More fun to unwrap, anyway."
Natalie glared. He was determined to have her naked as part of his birthday - not that she minded. Socks and pants though? He'd be sorry about that later.
"All right," Natalie said flashing a slightly wicked gamine smile. "Now if you'd like a little bit of a belated birthday cuddle, I can certainly oblige. Would like to, in fact."
"Now that sounds like a proper gift."
Natalie shook her head at him.
"Good girlfriend," he murmured against her lips as he kissed her again.
