Mac walked into the MLE offices swinging the sack in her hand. Hannah had packed Harry a lunch because she was convinced he was not eating. Mac had volunteered to bring it. She smirked at Harry's secretary as she walked past and let herself in the office.
"Lorelai, could you-" Harry looked up, raising an eyebrow at Mac. "Mac. Should I be frightened? I was threatened with a thrashing, yet you come with lunch. Seems a little odd to me."
"Hannah sent this," Mac said, tossing the bag at him.
Harry caught it easily.
"I want the truth and if I dinna get it, I will thrash you."
Sighing heavily, Harry sat back in his chair. "The answer is yes. I do think Brody looks better in a skirt than you."
Mac snorted before coming around a sitting on his desk. It just so happened she was wearing a skirt today, a short one. She also had on her boots though.
"He has better legs, but I've a better right hook. I'll take second place in a skirt." Mac leveled her gaze at him. "But we are not here to talk about tha'."
She paused and it was quiet for a long time.
"I know it's none of m'business, but do ya or dinna ya fancy Luna? I know I am no' wrong. I know it, but I dinna want to nudge iffen this is the one time I am."
"You shouldn't want to nudge because I already told you to stop pushing."
Harry frowned. He'd tried as hard as possible to forget what an utter arse he'd made of himself on Monday night. He was embarrassed beyond belief. He was a twenty-two year old man. He should be able to control himself better than that. Even as he thought that, however, he didn't know anyone who'd be able to control themselves if the person they fancied was kneeling in front of them, telling them to take off their trousers.
The fact that Luna could even look at him was surprising. He knew he'd be doing something to embarrass himself all over again on Saturday. He was pants at relationships, and even more pants at being suave around people he liked.
"Harry," Mac prompted. "I am no' goin' to throttle ya iffen ya dinna fancy her. I just want to be sure. Do ya now? There isna anyone else, is there?"
"I told her on Monday that there wasn't anyone else." Not that it matters. "She asked me what kind of person I'm looking for. Wanted to know so she could look for someone for me. She wants to set me up with someone, Mac."
"Ya really are pants at this. I canna say for certain, but iffen it were me, I'd ask to make sure I fit the bill, Harry."
Mac pointed at the sack.
"Start eatin'. I'm no' supposed to leave until ya do."
Harry grabbed the sack and pulled the sandwich out. It looked good, but then again, everything Hannah made looked good. He bit into it, a suspicious look on his face. "Girls don't make any sense. Dinner on Monday was completely awkward. I can't even believe she wants to see me again after that disaster."
"She does," Mac asked, grinning. "Well, that's good. Just try to be normal."
"I'm not exactly sure how to do normal."
"Just be open about thin's. Honest. Just try to act like ya did a'fore ya figured out ya liked her. Ya do like her, dinna ya? Iffen ya are plannin' on messin' Luna about, I'll hurt ya. I adore ya, Harry, but I'm right protective of the lass. Or ya could always just kiss her an' see what happens, aye?"
"Yeah, I kinda don't see that happening," he said around a mouthful of sandwich. He'd already made an embarrassment of himself the last time he saw her, she wasn't going to do it on Saturday, if he could help it. Mac could assume that Luna had feelings for him all she wanted, but he just wasn't sure. He couldn't be sure. The only way he could be sure was to risk her rejecting him, and he wasn't quite ready to risk their friendship over his hormones.
Mac rolled her eyes. She was really hoping Luna did not take Penny's advice otherwise she really would be an old maid before Harry made a move.
"Just promise me something. Iffen she makes a move on you, dinna take too long being shocked so that she thinks she's offended ya, aye?"
"Fine. If that were to happen, I'll make sure she knows exactly how I feel about her." Harry sincerely wished that he was as bold as Mac, able to just walk up to someone, tell them she liked them, and be done with it. The only relationships he'd had, barring his tumultuous one with Ginny, had ended badly. He didn't want to make Luna uncomfortable around him. He had to be completely sure it wouldn't ruin anything before he tried.
Mac gave him an encouraging pat on the shoulder. "Ya will do fine. Ya were able to kiss me back just fine. Granted, I'm no Luna Lovegood, but I manage."
Harry snorted. "Yes. Kiss you back. You're a lot braver person than me, Mac."
"It doesna always work out for me, Harry, but I canna not know, so I risk. Dinna work wit ya, but I'll no' be sorry I risked it."
Easier said than done, Harry thought, easier said than done.
