Katie was bordering on exhausted. Her game against the Wimbourne Wasps had been exceptionally long, the snitch apparently not wanting to be caught today. It hadn't helped that it had been pouring down rain and cold enough that no one was in doubt that winter would come early and fierce this year. The only consolation of the whole day was that her team had managed to pull out a win despite the bad conditions.
Bundled in oversized sweats, wrapped in blankets and curled up as close to the fire as she could without bursting into flame herself, Katie found that she was still freezing. The wizarding wireless was playing softly, the candles littering the sitting room giving off a soft, warm glow, and the monster puppies were snuggled up next to her on the floor. Her cheek resting against the soft fur of Kaiya's side, Katie felt her eyes growing heavy as she finally started to warm up, the husky's gentle breathing underneath her, Pea curled against her stomach, the quiet music in the background lulling her to sleep.
Greg felt numb, the Somnio Potion had done it's job earlier so he would have pleasant memories - even if they were false ones. He would say what he'd come to say and then run like hell. It would feel like he was ripping his heart out of his chest, just like it had last night when he'd wished Fred luck with Katie. He hated this. He had to do this though and he knew it. There was no way he could just walk away without looking at her one last time. She belonged to Fred. That was good, Fred was good for her. Just like the pixies she reminded him of, she needed to be set free.
He knocked gently, not wanting to set the dogs off.
Katie might not have heard the quiet knock if Pea hadn't started to squirm next to her, not barking, but obviously curious to see who was at the door. It took her a few moments to stiffly stand up, the rough game and sleeping on the floor having done nothing to ease the little aches she had all over her body. Padding towards the door, Kaiya and Pea following quietly behind her, she opened it to find Greg's face reflected in the dim glow of candlelight from inside. After rubbing her eyes sleepily, she gave him a small, tired smile. "Hallo, my puppy."
Greg wanted to pull her into his arms. But what he wanted and what he had to do were to completely different things. "Hi, Pixie," he said softly, resisting the urge to reach out and tuck her hair behind her ear. His fingers flexed as he reined in the urge to touch. He shuffled a bit, not wanting to just blurt out everything he had to say. "Do you have a minute?"
Something was off and she could feel it, but Katie couldn't pin it down. With flutter of worry in her chest, the smile fading from her lips, she put her back against the door, letting him in. "I always have a minute for you," she said softly as he stepped inside. She closed the door softly behind him and turned to see him standing in the entryway. He'd been careful not to touch her as he stepped through the door and she felt the flutter blossom. He didn't want her anymore. "Is ... is something wrong?"
Greg sighed. He didn't want to cause her pain. He was here to tell her goodbye quickly. She wanted Fred, she deserved Fred. He would step back as he should. He was too fucked up to ever be good enough for her. "I just wanted to tell you goodbye," he admitted softly.
She felt empty and a little lost. Something was wrong, so many things ghosting behind his eyes for the few moments he had looked at her, and Katie wanted to hold him close, to worry all over him, but he didn't want her anymore. Swallowing the knot of tears that wanted to come out, she took a small, steadying breath. She tucked her hands into her sleeves, suddenly cold all over again, and raised her eyes up to his, hoping that they weren't glassy. "O ... okay, then. I ... okay."
He wanted to crush her to his chest and make the pain go away. Shaking himself mentally he reminded himself that Fred would take good care of her. He wasn't what she needed or wanted. He reached his hand up to cup her face before pulling it back to his side. He backed up until he hit the door. Once his sweaty hand turned the nob, after at least five tries, he pulled the door open. "Fred deserves you, I don't. I wish you both the best." He took one last look at her and nearly crumpled to the floor. The tears in her beautiful eyes broke him all over again. "Bye, Pixie, I wish I deserved either of you."
She was stunned at his words, that he didn't think he was good enough for her, for Fred? He knew Fred? He thought she was with Fred? Fred hadn't decided to keep her and she wasn't his, not all the way. "But ..." It'd taken more than a few moments for her to catch up with her thoughts and he was gone before she could get her words out, the cold sea breeze blowing through her open door. "... but I want to keep you, puppy," she finished softly, the wind picking up her words and disappearing with them as a lone tear slid down her cheek.
