Tonks nodded at the question Romy had asked, chewing on her steak and cheese sandwich and holding up a finger to indicate that she would respond when she was done.
"I do think they'll be at his place tonight," she said finally, sipping her pumpkin juice. "They tend to be at his during the week, and hers during the weekend."
"It'd be nice if they could keep their hands off each other until they got inside," Romy groused. "He knows we're keeping an eye out for Montague. You'd think the man would have the decency to save the PDAs for when he didn't have an audience. Do you think he's just showing off? I'm not impressed."
It had been too long since she'd had any attention of her own, and it was making her crabby.
"If he is showing off," Tonks replied, dryly. "Then I'm really not impressed. I could do better on my own."
They had decided to go after Genevieve Montague first. Pucey was smart, so to say, and wouldn't show himself until he was ready to hurt Draco. Tonks hated that she would have to wait 'til then to find Pucey, but it was sound reasoning, and Draco was being careful- at least, as careful as Draco ever was.
Montague had yet to show up at Michael Corner's flat, and Romy and Tonks had been watching for weeks. It was getting very old watching him and Patil shag. Tonks was almost hoping something, anything happened, just so she could do something.
As Romy was about to respond, the adoring couple themselves stepped into view. As was typical, Corner had his tongue down his girlfriend's throat, and even though she knew it was juvenile, Romy could stop herself from making wretching noises.
"At least they kept stride this time, rather than stopping to snog on the steps. Now I know why people were so irritated by my knicker-flashing. A little discretion peop --" Movement in the shadows caught her attention. "Did you see that?" she asked, pointing.
"What? His one handed pants removal? I give it a five." Tonks said, pulling a face. She noticed that Romy wasn't pointing at the couple in the very lighted flat window, but to the shadows in the alley.
Whatever, or whoever, it was moved again.
"Do right. We should discreetly check it out." Tonks stood and stretched, tossing out the wrapper from her sandwich into a rubbish bin, and walking out of the cafe onto the walkway.
Romy followed, moving casually though her eyes were constantly scanning the dark passage across the street. It was definitely a person. A person slowly backing out of the alley, her face fixed on the window above.
Michael Corner's window.
"Bet it's her. Not even disguised. Too bad it's dark. You cross, I'll go farther down to try and get to the back of the alley," Tonks said under her breath.
"Nice to see you again, Daisy. Lunch next week, darling?" She said loudly, waving at Romy as she walked briskly in the cold night air down the block to get to the next alley.
"You bet, Elizabeth. Give my love to Colin!" Returning the wave, Romy started across the street, looking as though she was heading for Corner's building. She got a look at the woman's face as she passed. Definitely Montague. Azkaban had not cured the witch of her obsession; she was watching the lovers in the window with a look of intense rage.
Tonks also caught a look at Montague's face. That was a seriously pissed witch. She'd passed out of hearing range, and ran around the alley of the next building, and came to the back of the next alley, keeping to the shadows so hopefully the woman wouldn't see her.
As she passed near Genevieve Montague, Romy pretended to stumble, knocking into the woman. "Oh, I'm so sorry," she said, grabbing her by the arm under the guise of steading her. Pointing up toward the window where Corner and his lady friend were currently stuck together as if they'd been glued, she grumbled, "Can you believe that bloke? I'm thinking of starting a collection to by him some curtains. If I wanted to watch that sort of thing, I understand there are Muggle films I could go see."
Montague was speechless, her face turning red. It was as though she couldn't decide whether to join Romy in railing against the scene above them or attack Romy for badmouthing the man she 'loved'.
Tonks saw that Romy had a hand on Montague, and she made her way quickly up the alleyway. She was counting on Romy to keep a hand on the woman until Tonks could get there.
"Can you believe that man? Personally, her ass is better than his," Tonks said, casting a charm to silence the alley, and a few others to hopefully keep Montague from getting out.
She held up her badge. "Auror Tonks, Miss Montague. You're charged with escaping custody of Azkaban and stalking one Michael Corner. You'll need to come with us."
Genevieve screeched, immediately trying to yank her arm free of Romy's grip. "I'm not going anywhere with you!" Turning her head up toward Corner's window, she screamed, "Michael! Michael!"
"I think he's over you, Genevieve. Those love potions wear off pretty quickly." Romy pulled the woman's arm behind her back. "In fact, from what I've had to witness over the last few weeks, I'd say you are the last thing on his mind."
"He can't hear you, Miss Montague. This will go better for you if you cooperate with us," Tonks said, moving to bind the escaped prisoner when she threw her head back, screaming her anger, and hit Romy in the face, causing her nose to bleed.
Romy lost her hold, and Tonks was scrambling to get to the other side of Romy so she wouldn't hit her with any spells.
Montague was heading out towards the alleyway, and out of the sphere of the spells Tonks' had cast.
"Fuck!" Romy tore after her, thoroughly irritated at herself for letting go. A hex flew by and she threw herself to the ground, rolling into the shadows. "Petrificus totalus!" she shouted, casting into the dark.
Tonks ran past Romy, spells flying, but Montague made it out of range and into the street, still shrieking, and Disapparated into the night.
"Shite. She did that in front of Muggles, too." Tonks said, crouching and catching her breath. "Kings is not going to be happy. How's your nose?" She looked at Romy, who looked quite different with blood streaming down her face. Wasn't a look she should do, except for Halloween.
"Hmm?" Romy asked, still angry at her failure. "I'm fine. Just bloody. Fuck! I can't believe I let her get away." Pinching the bridge of her nose, she tipped her head back. "Should we interrupt Corner and Patil and let him know she was here?"
Tonks tapped the end of Romy's nose lightly with her wand and said "Episky," before looking up at Corner's window and glared.
"They're still going at it? Oh, dear god. I don't even... for the love of Merlin. Yes. I'm Apparating in the damn flat. You, too. That'll teach him. Randy bastard." Tonks was irritated, and that was putting it mildy. "Procedure, you know."
Nodding, Romy prepared to Apparate. "Just so you know, I fully intend to point and laugh."
"As long as it's officially."
