Theo situated Carly on an exam table and started gathering things. Neville was helping. They actually worked rather well together.
"I didn't mean she'd been in a camp. I'm the one that was in the camp, and sadly, I know malnutrition when I see it. Hell, I lived it for a while. Not by choice though."
Neville worked on fixing up her hands while Theo worked on her throat. "Sometimes I don't understand why people would put themselves through this." He looked up quickly. "Not that you put yourself in a camp, but why someone would starve themselves like this."
"Me neither," Theo said.
"I ate bread with mold on it once in there. Devoured it. Natalie always laughs because I still eat quickly I can't help it. It's a habit I formed in there."
"Nott!"
Theo looked at Neville. "Ah the dulcet tones of Daphne Greengrass. Probably has Dorny with her."
He stuck his head out of the door.
"Back here."
Jodie quickly rushed back to the exam room. Her hand covered her mouth but the gasp still escaped. "Theo, please tell me she's going to be okay."
Before he could answer, Jodie heard the front door open. "Jodie!" She turned and saw her youngest sister.
Jodie met her at the end of the lobby and quickly gave her a hug. "Harper, I want you to go owl mum and dad. Tell them that Carly is here at the clinic. Okay?"
Harper shook her head. "I want to stay with Carly."
"I need to someone to tell mum and dad, Harper. I need to stay here in case they need potions. Please, Harper."
As she watched her sister leave with a few friends that had brought her, Jodie turned back to Theo. "What do you need? I have to have something to do."
"I am going to give her a vitamin supplement potion. She's properly hydrated, but it looks like all she has been taking in is water. I need to bring her around first. What I need you to do for right now, Jodie, is stay calm and try to focus. Carly's going to be all right."
Jodie just shook her head and turned away from the room. This was one of the situations when she felt absolutely hopeless. She didn't know what to study or what to make. All that was left was to watch as her sister was being treated. She pulled a chair from the waiting room into the hallway and took a seat facing the room her sister was in.
Neville looked up to watch Jodie's face. Theo had it from here now that they knew the girl--Carly--wasn't in any immediate trouble. "Do I need to fetch a calming potion for you Jodie?" She shook her head. He walked out to the hallway. "She really is going to be fine. Supplemental potions, a strict diet, and her body will learn to be healthy again. Has she had any problems like this in the past?"
"She's always been concerned about her physical appearance, but I didn't know it was this bad. To be honest I never interacted with her much. She started Hogwarts the year I left, so the only time I saw her was during winter and summer breaks, if that. Harper could probably give you more information."
Jodie closed her eyes and tried to stop the tears from flowing. She normally didn't react so strongly, but she'd never been so terrified for her sister.
"Don't worry. She'll be fine."
"Ennervate," Theo said, bringing Carly around.
He lit the tip of his wand to peer into her eyes.
"Someone hit their head on the bar when she passed out. How are you feeling?"
"Like I hit my head on a wooden bar, you imbecile," Carly mumbled trying to turn her face away from the light. "Get that out of my face."
"Carly!" Jodie snapped, turning around to stare back into the room. Carly could barely move her arms to move Theo's wand away.
"Where am I?" Carly asked groggily.
"I'm the imbecile? At least I eat. You're in the clinic in Hogsmeade. I am a healer. You're suffering from malnutrition. That's what happens when you don't eat and just drink water. It's supplement potion time, and if you fight me, I'll bind you."
"What? I eat. You can ask any of my friends at school. I eat as much as they do."
Neville entered and crossed his arms with a glare. "And according to the bruising that was on your fingers and your raw throat, you would also get rid of whatever food you had eaten shortly after. It doesn't help if you don't keep it down."
"Shut up," Carly said, glaring at both Theo and Neville. "This is the clinic? I want to see my sister."
Daphne slipped in, no longer able to hold her tongue. "Give her scrawny arse the damned potion before she doesn't have to worry about malnutrition and I kill her for being a bitch. You passed out, you dumb shit. You scared Jodie near to death. She is worried about you. You're a minor. You don't get to make demands. What are they teaching these kids these days?"
Daphne sat down next to Jodie and put an arm around her.
Theo held out the supplement potion to Carly.
Neville snorted. "You've obviously got this under control. I'm going back to my office." There wasn't a need to crowd the exam room and the hallway.
Carly crossed her arms. "I'm not taking that. Not until I know what it is."
Jodie shot up and marched into the room. "Carly, you take that damn potion or I'll shove it down your throat myself!"
Her sister just stared at her with an open mouth and wide eyes. Jodie normally remained very calm and hardly ever swore. She took a couple of deep breaths to calm herself. "That is a nutritional supplement, Carly. Now either you take it willingly, or I'll force you to take it. I had Harper owl mum, and I know for a fact that if you don't take it on your own, she will not be happy."
Carly ripped the flask out of Theo's hands and drank, making a face afterward. "This tastes terrible."
Satisfied, Jodie went back to sit down by Daphne again.
Daphne was just sitting there smiling.
Theo was grinning at Carly. "I gave you the nasty tasting one on purpose. I guess you'll have to eat something to get the taste out of your mouth, huh?"
Carly glared at Theo. "Can I go now?"
"No," Jodie snapped. "I don't care if you're supposed to go back to Hogwarts. You obviously can't be trusted around yourself."
"You make it sound like I'm trying to kill myself."
"You were!" Jodie shouted. "Why do you think you passed out?"
Her sister tried to get up off the exam table. "Stop screaming at me Jodie!"
"Easy," Theo said, stepping between them. "Carly... lie down. Jodie, take it down a notch. No one is going anywhere. Carly, you're a minor and now under a healer's care. I need your parent or guardian's permission to release you, so why don't you get comfy."
Jodie sighed as Carly laid down and walked back out of the room, sighing whenever she saw her sister enter the clinic again, followed shortly by her mother.
"I flooed instead of owled. Figured it would be quicker," Harper said, jogging up to Jodie. "Is she--"
"Où est elle? Est elle bien?" Jodie's mother said quickly. She must have been nervous and worried because that was the only time she slipped into French.
"Elle est parfaite, la mère. Elle est dans cette pièce avec un guérisseur." Jodie pointed to the exam room. Her mother entered it immediately. "L'anglais, la mère, se souvient?" She shouted after her mother, before sitting back down with Daphne and Harper.
Giselle Dorny entered the exam room and let out a sigh when she saw Carly. "Oh Carly. What happened?" she asked, rushing over to give her daughter a hug. She turned to the healer. "What happened to her?"
Theo remained calm and expressionless. "Carly passed out in Three Broomsticks due to malnutrition. She's been eating, but throwing it right back up so none of it is processed through her body. When the body doesn't get enough nutrients from foods, it shuts down on itself. That's what happened today. I have already given her a supplement potion. She will need to take them regularly until she is able to digest food again properly. I would also suggest taking her to the family healer to make sure there is no damage to the esophagus or teeth due to the repeated purging of the stomach."
Jodie and Harper both looked at each other and sighed.
"How many do you think she'll use?"
"Three," Jodie replied promptly.
"Three what?"
"Swears," Harper said, looking around Jodie to Daphne. "When mum gets in a fit like this, she'll swear in French. Mostly muttering to herself, and then a few screaming bits, but we always bet on how many swears she'll use."
Ranting began in the exam room. It only last a few moments, but Jodie smiled a bit. "Like I told you. Three swears." She turned back to Daphne. "You can leave now. Brody probably need the help with both of us gone. I'll be back as soon as I can."
Daphne glared at her and remained seated.
"So Carly is going to be fine," Theo continued, ears ringing. "She just needs to eat regularly and let her body process the foods."
"I want her kept here overnight. I will make sure the school knows." Giselle sighed as she looked at Carly. "Since Jodie works here, I'd like to establish you as her primary healer. I want it close to the school."
"Mum..." Carly whined, but Giselle cut her off.
"No. de Vous ne reçoit pas le fait d'y dire. Si vous ne pouvez pas occuper de vous, je m'assurerai que quelqu'un d'autre vous fera le faire. Comprenez?"
"Yes, I understand. But do I have to stay here overnight?"
"I'm tempted to keep you here, but I know they need the space. I'm going to talk with your Headmistress and see if you can be home-schooled. Right now I'm going to let your father know what has happened."
Giselle nodded to Theo and walked out into the hallway again, ignoring Carly's irritated shouting. "I must owl your father. Thank you for letting me know, girls."
"No problem, Mum. I should probably get back to work," Jodie said, standing up to hug her mother. "Oh, Mum, this is Daphne Greengrass. She works with me at the Three Broomsticks. Daphne, this is my mother, Giselle."
Daphne wished desperately that her hair was combed. Still, she reverted to years of training and greeted the woman properly. With a demure bow and a serene facial expression.
"It is a pleasure, madam. You have a fine daughter who is a joy to have as a coworker."
Giselle gave Daphne a small smile. "Merci. Now, I'm off to get a hold of your father."
As her mother left, Jodie looked at Daphne strangely. "What was that?"
"You didn't know Daphne was groomed to be a debutante," Theo said. "You should see her cleaned up. She's actually pretty."
Daphne glared at him.
Theo looked at Carly. "I can have McGonagall owl you some pajamas or we have some lovely backless gowns for you to choose from."
"What do you think?" Carly snapped. "I want my own."
"Go back with your friends, Harper," Jodie said quietly. "I'll deal with mum and make sure you're updated."
Harper clearly wanted to object, but she eventually nodded and stood, going to meet with her friends. Jodie turned back to Theo. "Thank you so much for doing this, and for putting up with Carly. Mum will be able to talk her down, but she's not known for being very reasonable when she's hurt."
"Jodie, nothing Carly does will get to me. I should let you meet my mother sometime."
Daphne snorted. Theo's mother was a pill.
"She'll be fine, Jodie. Whether she likes it or not."
Jodie nodded and sighed. "Back to work then. Thanks again. I'll probably see you tomorrow or on Monday."
She turned to Daphne. "Ready to head back?"
"Sure," Daphne replied. "Let's go. Thanks, Nott." As they walked into the hall, Daphne called, "Bye, Longbottom!"
Jodie sighed as they walked out onto the street. "This is not how I saw my Saturday going. Sorry to drag you away from work."
Daphne snorted. "Yeah. I so enjoyed pouring butterbeers for a bunch of snotty students."
Jodie let out a small smile. "Well thanks for going with me to make sure Carly was okay. It means a lot to me."
Daphne rolled her eyes.
